NIMR to award best scientists Oct. 4

THE National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) will award best scientists of the year in its 30th scientists’ symposium to start on October 4 in Dar es Salaam.

NIMR Director General, Dr Mwele Malecela, said in Dar es Salaam yesterday that the goal of the awards was to recognise their contribution in addressing challenges facing the public, saying the awards would motivate them to conduct more researches.
“NIMR believes researchers can play a great role in development through different researches,” she said.
The three-day symposium, whose opening will be graced by Vice-President Samia Suluhu Hassan, goes under the theme ‘Investment in Research vital to attain Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs)’ and it will attract about 300 participants from 18 countries.
Dr Malecela named the participating countries in the symposium as South Africa, Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Sweden, Norway, Bangladesh, Thailand, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, USA and the host Tanzania.
“A total of 220 topics will be presented in the meeting which will focus on how to improve maternal health, clean water and sanitation and prevention of epidemic diseases,” she observed.
Dr Malecela pointed out the categories in the awards as Top African Researcher, Top Tanzanian medical Researcher, Best Innovative Researcher of the year and that NIMR will award public figures whose contribution facilitated to improve medical research.
She said this year’s theme focuses on SDGs and it’s aimed at encouraging local philanthropists to support scientific research projects pointing out that most projects depend on foreign donors.
“Researchers therefore should play a role to help Tanzanians to attain SDGs which focus on prevention of diseases,” said Dr Malecela.
The SDGs, officially known as Transforming Our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, is a set of 17 global goals.

While Goal number 6 targets to achieve availability of Clean Water and improvement of Sanitation, Goal number 3 targets to achieve Good Health and Wellbeing.
